U19 OBLX 2023-2024 Season Recap
OBLX U19 Provincial Champions!
Need I say more? While the gold medal speaks for itself, the journey to this achievement is equally noteworthy. This team boasted an ideal blend of seasoned players and fresh talent, with a balanced mix of Grade 11 and Grade 12 girls. Expectations were understandably high, given their ability to run, shoot, defend, and rebound—everything you want in a basketball team.
However, it took time for the girls to gel and truly understand one another. Throughout league play, we found ourselves in the middle of the pack, often alternating between wins and losses, frequently dropping our first game of the day. Injuries plagued us, with knee and head issues leading to extended recoveries. During our last OBL weekend, we had only seven players available, yet we still managed to maintain our typical 50% win rate.
Tournaments played a crucial role in helping us come together as a cohesive unit. Winning tough games against unfamiliar opponents instilled confidence and solidified our belief in ourselves as a strong team. Entering the provincial playoffs as the 5th seed among eight teams, we faced a challenging start against the #1 London team. Though we lost that first game, the girls displayed tenacity, patience, unity, and exceptional basketball skills. While offense may win games, it is defense that truly wins championships—and this team demonstrated that principle brilliantly.
I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Tim, Martha, parents, families, and the entire Spirits community for your unwavering support throughout the season. Strong foundations foster strong individuals, and that is clearly evident here. Thank you.
To Avery, Charlotte, Charlotte, Emery, Evelyn, Grace, Lou, Mak, Morgan, Mya, and Samantha: this gold medal win is a testament to your hard work and dedication. It’s been an incredible journey with fantastic results. Cherish this moment and the memories you’ve created with your teammates.
