Who is Mike Kirby?

When Mike Kirby, along with Paul Gaudet, founded the Spirits basketball program in 1987, he never imagined it would flourish for almost four decades. “I’d love to say I had a grand vision for how the Spirits would grow over 40 years, but that wouldn’t be true,” Kirby admits. “It all began with baby steps. As basketball in Ontario flourished, so did the Spirits.”

A former high school player at the now-closed Belleville Collegiate and a varsity athlete at Queen’s University, Kirby experienced firsthand the excitement of games, practices, tournaments, road trips, and the lifelong friendships forged along the way. Transitioning from playing to coaching and organizing for younger players felt like a natural next step. “People often talk about ‘giving back,’ but to me, that sounds like an obligation. For me, it was an absolute privilege and pleasure to serve as the Spirits’ president for so many years.”

Kirby credits much of his passion for the game to his high school coach, Bill Miller. “He lived and breathed basketball and was an inspiring, motivating coach. He dedicated countless hours every season to helping us improve.” Coaches like Miller—and other Bay of Quinte legends such as Ken Smith, Doug Irvine, and Gary Duggan—served as role models for Kirby’s own coaching journey.

What began in 1987 with just eight girls has grown, thanks to the dedication of players, coaches, parents, and volunteers, into one of the most respected programs in Ontario. While skill development has always been a priority, the Spirits have also emphasized building confidence, character, and a strong commitment to team goals.

Kirby is confident that the current group of coaches and volunteers will continue to build on this legacy of excellence.
