Who is Mike Kirby?

When Mike Kirby, along with Paul Gaudet, founded the Spirits basketball program in 1987, he had no idea it would thrive for more than three decades. “I’d love to say I had a grand vision for how the Spirits would grow over 30 years, but that wouldn’t be true,” Kirby admits. “It all began with baby steps. As basketball in Ontario flourished, so did the Spirits.”

A former high school player at the now-closed Belleville Collegiate and a varsity athlete at Queen’s University, Kirby experienced firsthand the excitement of games, practices, tournaments, road trips, and the lifelong friendships forged along the way. Transitioning from playing to coaching and organizing for younger players felt like a natural next step. “People often talk about ‘giving back,’ but to me, that sounds like an obligation. For me, it was an absolute privilege and pleasure to serve as the Spirits’ president for so many years.”

Kirby credits much of his love for the game to his high school coach, Bill Miller. “He lived and breathed basketball and was an inspiring, motivating coach. He dedicated countless hours every season to helping us improve.” Coaches like Miller—and other Bay of Quinte legends such as Ken Smith, Doug Irvine, and Gary Duggan—served as his role models.

What began in 1987 as a small group of eight girls has grown, thanks to the dedication of players, coaches, parents, and volunteers, into one of the most respected programs in Ontario. While skill development has always been a priority, the Spirits also emphasize building confidence in players and fostering a commitment to team goals.

Kirby has full confidence that the current group of coaches and volunteers will carry on this legacy of excellence.
